the house

Casa Naga draws its inspiration from the wonders of Panama.  Famous for the Panama Canal, an incredible engineering feat that joins the Pacific Ocean with the Caribbean Sea, this story is visible from the moment you draw up to the house, cross over the water feature that represents the Caribbean Sea, raise up the sweeping stairs and pass through the soaring front door, reminiscent of the lock systems of the Panama Canal and on into the 50 foot high entrance hall.

Here you will cross over the still waters that represent the man-made Gatun Lake.  The lush rain forest that surrounds the house sits behind the floating staircase, made from Cumaru trees buried more than 120 years ago beneath the rising waters of the lake.   Look up to catch a glimpse of the moon high above you and then follow your eyes down through the house and out into the blue waters of the swimming pool and towards the Pacific Ocean.  There you can see ships on the horizon waiting patiently for their turn to pass through the Canal.  It is as if you have journeyed across the very Canal of Panama.

It is a vision of English designer James Derry, in conjunction with the owner.  With clean modern lines and a relaxed feel, 18 foot ceilings throughout the house maintain a feeling of freshness and tranquility.  Casa Naga has been carefully curated to create different sensations, whilst never leaving behind the sense of peace and harmony that the house transmits.  Filled with art and artefacts collected from all corners of the globe, Casa Naga offers a sophisticated palate of cultures whilst never forgetting its Panmanian roots.

The house’s main elements are Cumaru wood, forest green marble and black stone alongside slabs of fossil filled, sand honed rock and porcelain floor tiles. These unique and textured finishes combine harmonically with the whites, beiges, and taupe tones used in most of the decoration of the house, providing the perfect canvas to let the ocean and the architectural details shine.
